Ipswich City Council has kicked off 2026 with major projects aimed at supporting families, improving infrastructure and enhancing the city’s natural attractions, according to Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio, Cr Madsen said the new year had begun at a fast pace, with council focused on delivering services for a rapidly growing community.
“With so many young families in Division 1, it’s a busy time of year with kids heading back to school,” he said. “We’re reminding drivers to slow down in school zones and help keep students safe.”
Cr Madsen highlighted a key decision from council’s first ordinary meeting of the year, approving a long-awaited upgrade to the Ipswich Nature Centre at Queen’s Park. The popular free wildlife attraction will receive a “once-in-a-generation” refurbishment, including improvements to boardwalks and behind-the-scenes facilities.
“It’s a place generations of families have enjoyed,” he said. “These works will make sure it remains a great experience for years to come and continue to attract visitors from across South East Queensland.”
Council also progressed further procurement for the Springfield Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial duplication, one of its largest road projects. Cr Madsen said the upgrade would ease congestion and reduce travel times for residents in fast-growing areas.
“It’s frustrating while construction is underway, but the long-term benefits will be huge,” he said.
Residents were also encouraged to have their say on the proposed upgrade of the Paperbark Flats picnic area at White Rock, with public consultation closing on February 1.
The project, funded through Enviroplan, aims to improve facilities, security and family-friendly features at the popular nature destination.
Cr Madsen also reflected on Ipswich’s Australia Day celebrations, congratulating 2026 Citizen of the Year Ali Brigginshaw and other award recipients.
“Ipswich continues to produce world-class talent and outstanding community leaders,” he said. “These awards help tell the positive story of our city.”
He urged residents to stay engaged by watching council meetings online and nominating deserving locals for future community and sporting awards.
“This is how we keep building pride in Ipswich,” Cr Madsen said.
