The birth of a legend:

From his beginnings as a story book character back in 1946, Thomas the Tank Engine has been a beloved superstar in children’s fiction.

He first appeared on television in the 1980s and has been voiced by luminaries including Ringo Starr.

The brainchild of Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher, Thomas is a blue steam engine with the number one painted on his side, and was based on a toy train owned by Christopher.

The stories about Thomas, originally written by Wilbert, were created around the toy train. Once illustrator Reginald Payne was engaged to illustrate the Thomas stories, Wilbert chose a photograph of a real Billinton designed E2 class London train.
