Queensland residents are being urged to save the national emergency alert number in their phones to ensure they receive critical warnings during emergencies and disasters.

Senior Constable Shantelle Dowell highlighted the importance of the system during this week’s Crime Watch segment, explaining that emergency alerts are issued via voice messages to landlines and text messages to mobile phones when dangerous weather or other life-threatening situations arise.

“Emergency alerts are only issued when necessary and contain potentially life-saving instructions,” she said. “Residents should check that the emergency alert number, +61 444 444 444, is not blocked on their devices and save it as a favourite so they don’t miss important updates.”

Emergency alerts are part of a national geo-targeting system, ensuring residents receive warnings relevant to their area. Messages from this number are not scams and will override “Do Not Disturb” settings on mobile devices.

In addition to emergency alerts, Queenslanders can stay informed through local government disaster dashboards, including the Ipswich Disaster Dashboard, which provides up-to-date information for the region.

“For life-threatening situations, always call Triple Zero (000),” Dowell advised. “For non-urgent police matters, contact Policelink on 131 444, and for storm or flood-related damage, reach out to the SES on 132 500.”

Residents can also stay informed about weather conditions by checking the Bureau of Meteorology’s website at bom.gov.au.

“This is a trusted system designed to keep people safe,” Dowell emphasised. “By saving the emergency alert number, you can ensure you stay informed and prepared in times of crisis.”
