Ipswich-based artist Don Hill is turning heads with his breathtaking artwork, blending environmental themes and storytelling in his latest book, I Sound Like Rain.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s “Get Your Arts in Gear”, Don shared insights into his artistic journey and how he integrates his illustrations into his books.
“I started painting at 16, but I didn’t begin writing until I was 67,” Don said. “I’ve worked in the print industry for years, which helped me bring my stories to life in book form.”
A Passion for Art and Nature
Don’s work is deeply inspired by nature, particularly his travels to New Zealand and Far North Queensland. His latest book explores the mystical legend of the Boulders, a site where a young Indigenous woman is said to have perished, her spirit calling young men to the water.
“The legend has a tragic beauty to it,” Don explained. “Over 20 men have drowned there in recent years, despite warnings.”
His artwork and storytelling intertwine to create visually stunning narratives that highlight history, culture, and nature.
Bringing Art to Ipswich
Although Don has lived in Ipswich since 2008, he is still making his mark on the local art scene. He recently applied for an exhibition space at the Ipswich Community Gallery but is looking for more opportunities to showcase his work.
“We need more local venues to support artists,” he said. “Until then, people can view and purchase my books online.”
