The aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred has sparked discussions on the importance of emergency action planning and wellness strategies during natural disasters. Speaking on All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio, Focal Community Services CEO Tanya and host Patty shared insights on how organizations and individuals can better prepare for future crises.
Tanya highlighted the challenges faced by Focal during the cyclone, including supporting vulnerable clients and managing workforce disruptions due to school closures. “We had to map out those who live alone and ensure they had the necessary support,” she explained. “It was a long few days of uncertainty, which can take a toll on mental wellness.”
The conversation shifted to personal well-being during disasters, emphasizing the need to manage stress and anxiety. Patty advised residents to limit media consumption to one reliable source, such as the Bureau of Meteorology, to avoid unnecessary panic. “Overexposure to sensationalized news can heighten anxiety. Sticking to a single trusted source can help maintain calm,” she said.
Emergency preparedness was also a key takeaway. Tanya stressed the importance of maintaining updated emergency action plans, having essential supplies on hand, and ensuring that vulnerable individuals have a support network. “We need to learn from these experiences and not forget the lessons,” she urged.
Focal is now reviewing its internal processes to enhance response times and information access in future emergencies. Additionally, they encouraged residents to utilize community resources, including government recovery pages that offer templates for emergency planning.
With disaster events becoming increasingly common, Patty suggested incorporating emergency preparedness discussions into the All Ability Hour on a regular basis. “Every few months, we’ll provide tips to help our community stay ready,” she said.
