Disney’s beloved island adventure Moana has officially arrived at Limelight Cinemas, with the highly anticipated live-action remake launching as a special midweek release during the school holidays.
Lex from Limelight Cinemas said Wednesday releases were unusual for cinemas but would allow families extra opportunities to catch the film before the school holidays end.
“It’s a Wednesday release, which is a bit different for us in cinema land,” Lex said.
“I think Disney is trying to give families as much of the school holidays as possible with a brand-new release.”
The live-action adaptation stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui, alongside Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia, daughter of actor Jay Laga’aia, who takes on the title role of Moana.
Lex said having an Australian lead was a special moment.
“It’s so exciting. I just love that they’ve put an Australian actress in that role,” she said.
“The world press tour has been fantastic to watch and it’s been great seeing the cast really embrace the culture that Moana celebrates.”
The film also introduces new music while retaining many of the songs that made the original animated film a global favourite.
“We’re going to be spoiled with some new music as well as hearing the cast perform the songs everyone already loves,” Lex said.
Exclusive movie merchandise arrives
Fans can also take home exclusive Moana merchandise, with limited-edition collectibles now available at Limelight Cinemas.
Among the range is a themed ripple-effect drink cup featuring glitter suspended inside to recreate the look of ocean waves, along with collectible popcorn tins arriving in limited numbers.
“This is one of my favourite pieces of merchandise,” Lex said.
“It has a really cool ripple effect with glitter inside and it looks fantastic.”
She warned moviegoers not to wait too long if they wanted to secure the collectibles.
“We’ve seen previous merchandise sell out incredibly quickly, so these won’t last forever.”
State of Origin on the big screen
Away from Hollywood, Limelight Cinemas will also screen State of Origin Game III live on the big screen.
Lex said the cinema offered fans the next best experience to being at Suncorp Stadium.
“Suncorp sells out so far in advance that I always say this is the next best place to see it,” she said.
The cinema’s bar will remain open through the first half, allowing patrons to enjoy food and drinks while watching the decider.
More entertainment on the way
Anime fans are also being catered for, with Kiki’s Delivery Service returning for a special anniversary screening, kicking off a month-long celebration of Studio Ghibli classics.
The coming week will also see the latest instalment in the Evil Dead franchise arrive for horror fans.
Despite a busy school holiday period, Lex said the team had loved welcoming families through the doors.
“It’s been a lot of fun,” she said.
“Toy Story and Minions have been absolute chaos—but our favourite kind of chaos. Moana is going to be a fantastic way to finish off the school holidays.”
