Limelight Cinemas is serving up a mix of crime, white-knuckle survival and big-screen nostalgia this week, with two new releases joined by anniversary screenings of Terminator 2 and Cars — complete with limited-edition merchandise already generating plenty of attention.
Speaking on the Limelight Cinemas Podcast, Lex said the week’s new releases include By Any Means, an action crime thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and Josh Lucas.
Set against Mississippi in 1966, the film follows an unlikely partnership between an FBI agent and a notorious hitman as they investigate the murders of civil rights leaders.
Wahlberg undergoes a significant transformation for the role, appearing as an older hitman who walks with a cane.
Lex described the movie as a combination of action, thriller, crime and drama, with the investigation placing the unlikely partners in an increasingly dangerous situation.
Fall 2 takes audiences back to terrifying heights
Also arriving at Limelight is Fall 2: Dead Point, continuing the survival thriller franchise that is definitely not recommended for anyone uncomfortable with heights.
The new story follows Jax and Luce, who are connected through the death of Jax’s sister Hunter and are attempting to deal with their grief by taking on the infamous plank walk of Mount Kwan in Thailand.
Their adventure takes a terrifying turn when a rockslide leaves them stranded thousands of feet above the ground on a precarious structure.
For Lex, who admitted to having an intense fear of heights, even watching the trailer was uncomfortable.
“This is what my nightmares are made out of,” she said.
The film follows the pair’s fight for survival as they find themselves trapped high above the ground with seemingly few options for escape.
Terminator 2 returns after 35 years
Arnold Schwarzenegger will also be back on the Limelight big screen as Terminator 2: Judgment Day celebrates its 35th anniversary.
Lex said anniversary screenings had become an opportunity for two generations of moviegoers — those who remember seeing the films originally and younger audiences experiencing the classics in a cinema for the first time.
Many older titles are also presented in remastered versions, while modern cinema projection and sound technology can provide a different experience from what audiences encountered decades ago.
For fans who grew up with Terminator 2, the anniversary screening provides the chance to once again experience one of the era’s biggest action films in the environment it was designed for.
Cars turns 20 with limited-edition merchandise
However, some of the biggest excitement this week surrounds the 20th anniversary of Disney and Pixar’s Cars.
Limelight has secured several limited-edition collector items featuring Lightning McQueen and Mater, with Lex warning that quantities are extremely limited.
The merchandise has already attracted significant interest after being previewed on Limelight’s social media channels.
“We shared this on our socials and it went crazy,” Lex said.
Among the items is a premium double-wall drink cup featuring both Lightning McQueen and Mater as character toppers.
A commemorative popcorn tin also features the pair and has been produced with detailing marking the movie’s 20th anniversary.
But the standout could be a Lightning McQueen-shaped popcorn container, allowing fans to take the famous number 95 race car into the cinema while watching the anniversary screening.
As with previous collector releases, guests who don’t want to put food directly into their memorabilia can ask for their popcorn separately, helping keep the collector item in new condition.
Lex said the Lightning McQueen container in particular was in extremely short supply, with Limelight already trying to source additional stock.
All three Cars collector items are due to become available from Friday morning while stocks last, with fans being encouraged to get in early.
With By Any Means and Fall 2: Dead Point providing the new releases and Terminator 2 and Cars bringing the nostalgia, it’s another varied week on the Limelight Cinemas big screen.
And for Cars fans hoping to secure some of the limited-edition merchandise, there may be only one appropriate response: Ka-chow!
