It’s a massive day at the movies today as two of the year’s biggest flicks go head-to-head!
On one hand, we’ve got the Barbie movie that celebrates the iconic doll and her fantastic life in plastic, and on the other, we have the cerebral, noir Oppenheimer biopic about the creator of the world’s first atomic bomb. Quite the opposing vibes!

So how are people choosing which one to see when we have two such massive movies coming out on the same day? Well, believe it or not, it’s actually sparked a whole social media trend called Barbenheimer, as fans get ready to watch both, back-to-back.
The new Barbenheimer movement has even led to a new dating trend! Like the two films, which are completely opposite in every imaginable way – one is pink, glittery, frothy and fun, while the other is a dark, thought-provoking noir thriller – the Barbenheimer dating trend is sweeping the interwebs, encouraging people to actively seek out prospective partners who are completely opposite to them.
Imagine goths dating princess-esque girly girls, or a heavy metal rocker dating a nerdy accountant type and you get the idea. It’s gone so wild on social media that it’s even making its way to the cast of both movies who are answering questions about the Barbenheimer trend sweeping the world, while chatting to reporters on the red carpet at the movies’ premieres.
Viral (and usually blink-and-you’ll-miss-it-brief) social media trends are nothing new and for months now, the Babie aesthetic has been sweeping the globe, causing worldwide pink paint shortages, and seeing major fashion and beauty houses embracing all things pink and glittery.
What makes this trend such a global phenomenon is this; rarely have two such completely opposite worlds collided in this perfect storm, with both movies hitting the silver screen on the same day and creating such a huge social impact on the collective conscious, that it’s actually become its own entity. Check out any of your favourite social media platforms right now, and you’ll see the word Barbenheimer everywhere!

The biggest question though is this…if you’re planning to go full Barbenheimer and see both movies in one day, which one will you see first?
