Ipswich’s Limelight Cinemas has begun 2026 on a high note, following a busy Christmas and New Year period and the successful launch of several highly anticipated films.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Limelight Cinemas podcast, cinema representative Lex said the summer blockbuster season had delivered strong attendance and momentum for the year ahead.
“The Christmas and New Year period is always chaotic, but it’s the kind of chaos we love,” Lex said. “We’ve had fantastic releases and now we’re moving straight into awards season, recognising some really great films.”
Recent titles such as Mighty Supremes and Hamnet have already received major award nominations and wins, while audiences have continued to turn out in large numbers for films including Song-Song Blue, a Neil Diamond tribute feature.
Lex said family favourites such as Zootopia, SpongeBob, Anaconda and David dominated the school holiday period, while more mature releases like Housemaid, Primate and Mercy have helped bring adult audiences back into cinemas.
One of the biggest highlights of the new year has been the arrival of the independent horror film Iron Lung, created by YouTube star Markiplier. According to Lex, fan demand for the film was unprecedented.
“Our inbox was flooded,” she said. “His fans contacted cinemas all over the world asking for the film. The response was unbelievable.”
Limelight Cinemas successfully secured Australian screenings, with ticket pre-sales reportedly exceeding expectations and prompting the addition of extra sessions, including in Gold Class cinemas.
“The pre-sales were bigger than some major superhero releases,” Lex said. “It shows the power of fan support and the value of independent cinemas.”
The cinema is also catering to horror fans this week with the release of Send Help, adding to what Lex described as a “horror-heavy” start to the year.
With strong attendance continuing and weekly podcasts set to resume, Limelight Cinemas is confident of another successful year.
