Bundamba MP Lance McCallum has delivered a sharp warning over rising living costs as he joined West Bremer Radio for his final State of Play segment of 2025, just as Queensland Parliament enters its last sitting day for the year.

McCallum said the final week in parliament had been “interesting and robust,” centred around the government’s newly introduced Energy Roadmap Bill, which he strongly criticised.
According to ABS data, he said electricity prices have risen over 468% in Queensland due to the removal of energy rebates. He also raised concerns that the proposed legislation cuts Queensland’s renewable energy target and “opens up the power system to privatisation.”

“Queenslanders have been very clear — our energy assets should stay in public hands,” McCallum said, warning that privatisation has historically led to higher power bills across Australia. He also pointed to the recent announcement of the Brigilo Gas Peaker near Kogan, which will be privately owned despite publicly owned CS Energy committing to buy back 80% of its power for 25 years.
“I think it’s incredibly short-sighted,” he said.

Rents Surge Across Ipswich

Turning to housing pressures, McCallum said the latest figures show 81% of renters in Ipswich are experiencing rental stress — far higher than the state average.

New data shows rental prices have exploded across suburbs in the Bundamba electorate:

  • 70–79% increases in Bellbird Park, Goodna, Augustine Heights, Springfield and Carole Park
  • 80–89% increases in Collingwood Park, Redbank, Redbank Plains, Bundamba, Silkstone and more
  • Nearly 100% rent hikes in suburbs such as Dinmore and Riverview

“People are being priced out of their own communities,” McCallum said. “We all know someone who’s had to move because they simply can’t afford the increase.”

He called for stronger state action to increase housing supply, including more social homes and support for aspiring homeowners.

Celebrating Students and Looking Toward Christmas

McCallum also reflected on the many school graduations and award ceremonies he has attended in recent weeks, congratulating Year 6 students moving into high school and the Year 12 class of 2025 embarking on life after school.

As he prepares for a short break, the MP thanked essential workers who will remain on duty over Christmas and encouraged locals to take time to rest and recharge.

McCallum joked he may be spotted “lounging at the Orion Lagoon — with plenty of sunscreen,” before wishing listeners a safe and happy festive season.

“I can’t wait to catch up again in 2026,” he said.

The State of Play segment will return in the new year on West Bremer Radio.
