This week marks Child Protection Week, a significant event that aims to raise awareness and encourage conversations around child safety and protection. Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy of the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit emphasized the importance of this week during an interview on West Bremer Radio.

The theme for this year’s National Child Protection Week is “Every Child and Every Community Needs a Fair Go,” complemented by the message “Every Conversation Matters.” Constable Sheedy stressed the importance of speaking up and working together to ensure every child in every community is protected and given a fair chance at life. “Many people play a role in child protection every day as individuals, community members, volunteers, and workers,” she said. “This week is an opportunity to acknowledge those efforts.”
To honor those making a difference, the Ipswich and West Moreton Region will host the annual Child Protection Week Gala Dinner and Awards presentation. This event, taking place on Friday, September 6th, at the Ipswich Events and Entertainment Centre in Bundamba, will recognise individuals, volunteers, and community workers who contribute to child safety. Tickets can be purchased online.
Constable Sheedy also highlighted the importance of having age-appropriate conversations with children about personal safety, internet safety, and what to do if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe. “Children should be aware of their surroundings, have a personal safety plan, and know their right to safety,” she advised. Additionally, parents are encouraged to set up content filters and supervise online activity to ensure a safer digital environment.

Constable Sheedy concluded by urging the community to speak up for children, saying, “It’s time for children’s voices to be heard to make the necessary changes to protect them.” The community is encouraged to report any concerns about child abuse or exploitation to the police or Crime Stoppers to ensure all children are safe and supported.
