From protecting local bees to celebrating schools, community groups and veterans, Ipswich West MP Wendy Bourne has highlighted a busy week of community milestones across the electorate.
Ms Bourne recently joined local beekeepers for a workshop examining the challenges posed by the Varroa mite, even donning a beekeeper suit to visit hives and see firsthand how they are tested.
She said beekeepers played an essential role not only in producing honey but also in pollinating fruit and vegetables, encouraging residents to check labels and support Australian-produced honey.
Meanwhile, Haigslea State School is preparing to celebrate an impressive 150 years, with anniversary celebrations planned for Saturday, August 29.
The event will run from 9am until 3pm, with activities, a sausage sizzle and fundraising planned as the school community marks the milestone.
The Queensland Country Women’s Association has also celebrated its centenary, with Ms Bourne praising its volunteers for their wide-ranging contribution to the community.
She highlighted the group’s work producing items for nursing homes, trauma bears for hospitals and emergency services, support for people experiencing domestic violence and homelessness, breakfast programs and birthing kits for communities overseas.
Ms Bourne also attended several Vietnam Veterans Day commemorations, including services with the Rosewood RSL, Ipswich RSL and Ipswich Railway Sub Branch.
She said recognising Vietnam veterans remained particularly important given many did not receive the welcome and recognition they deserved when they originally returned home.
There was also cause for celebration at Rosewood Kindy, which recently took out first prize for its display at the Rosewood Show.
Ms Bourne visited the kindergarten to congratulate the children and inspect its upgraded playground, which was supported through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Bendigo Bank and fundraising by local families.
