Community generosity, local business growth and sporting achievements were among the highlights discussed by Ipswich City Councillor David Martin during his latest update on West Bremer Radio.

Councillor Martin praised the generosity of Kalbar Sunflowers, who recently donated another cuddle bed to the West Moreton Health Foundation, helping provide comfort for families supporting loved ones receiving palliative care.

The specially designed beds allow family members to remain beside patients overnight during their final days.

“It’s a great effort,” Cr Martin said.

He acknowledged Kalbar Sunflowers owner Jenny, who has now donated three cuddle beds across the West Moreton Health region after losing her own husband to cancer.

“These beds are so important,” he said.

Frozen yoghurt arrives at Karalee

Residents of Karalee now have another sweet option, with locally-owned business Yo Goat opening its second frozen yoghurt store at Karalee Shopping Village.

The business follows the success of its Yamanto outlet and adds to the growing popularity of frozen yoghurt across Ipswich.

Cr Martin said the new business filled a gap in the shopping centre’s dining options.

“It’s really good to see another local business expanding,” he said.

He also pointed out that the store serves authentic frozen yoghurt made from real dairy milk, offering customers a genuine yoghurt experience.

Classic cars bring Rosewood to life

Hundreds of visitors descended on Rosewood for the return of George’s Rumble, with classic cars, motorcycles and hot rods lining the streets.

Hosted by the Royal George Hotel and George’s Garage, the event showcased everything from Holden Toranas and Ford Falcons to Mustangs, hot rods and vintage motorcycles.

“There were some cracking cars,” Cr Martin said.

He estimated millions of dollars’ worth of vehicles were on display and said the event delivered a welcome boost for local businesses.

“The pub was busy, Harry’s was busy, Ocean Bites did well. It was great to see the town come alive.”

A Queensland Origin story with local roots

Following the State of Origin decider, Cr Martin shared the little-known Ipswich connection to New South Wales centre Bradman Best.

He explained Bradman’s father, Roger Best, grew up in Pine Mountain and represented Queensland through the junior ranks before joining the powerhouse Manly Sea Eagles during one of the club’s strongest eras.

Despite his talent, injuries cut Roger’s career short before he eventually settled on the New South Wales Central Coast, where Bradman was born and raised.

Interestingly, Bradman’s younger brother Baxter Best now plays rugby league for Norths and attends St Edmund’s College in Ipswich.

Cr Martin admitted the family’s split State of Origin loyalties made for an entertaining evening at home.

“My wife goes for New South Wales, so she’s very happy,” he laughed.

“Happy wife, happy life.”

Ipswich hockey earns statewide praise

Cr Martin also congratulated Ipswich Hockey following the successful hosting of the Queensland Under-14 Boys State Championships, which attracted 20 teams from across the state.

He praised both Ipswich representative teams, with the top side finishing fourth overall after narrowly missing a place in the grand final.

The second Ipswich team also impressed despite fielding several players as young as 12 years old.

However, it was the teams’ sportsmanship that stood out, with Ipswich awarded the championship’s Best and Fairest Team honour after being voted by competing associations.

“It was a fantastic achievement,” Cr Martin said.

Community pop-up offices continue

Residents will also have opportunities to speak directly with Division 4 councillors during upcoming community pop-up offices.

Following recent sessions in Marburg, the council team will next visit Rosewood, followed by Yamanto and Brassall, giving residents the chance to raise local issues and provide feedback on council projects.

Cr Martin encouraged locals to drop in.

“It’s always good to get community input and hear how people are feeling.”
