Ipswich District Police are encouraging residents to think carefully about the choices they make behind the wheel, with a free community road safety event in Boonah focusing on the unique dangers faced by motorists on regional and rural roads.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch, Senior Constable Chantelle Dowell from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit said the event would combine practical road safety information with interactive activities designed to help reduce serious crashes and fatalities.

The Community Rural Road Safety Event will be held in Park Street, Boonah, from 9am to 11.30am on Thursday and is free for community members to attend.

Senior Constable Dowell said regional road safety remained a significant concern, with more than two-thirds of road fatalities occurring in regional areas.

The event aims to help motorists, motorcyclists and other road users better understand the risks they face and the simple decisions that can make a difference.

Motorcycles, e-mobility and impairment

A range of road safety topics will be covered throughout the morning, including safe motorcycle riding practices and the rules surrounding increasingly popular e-mobility devices.

Police will also focus on the importance of making safe decisions before getting behind the wheel.

One of the interactive activities will give visitors the chance to wear vision impairment goggles, which simulate some of the effects impairment can have on a person’s ability to see and react to their surroundings.

Participants will also be able to explore emergency service vehicles and speak with those involved in keeping people safe on Queensland roads.

Free road safety resources and information will be available throughout the event.

‘Every choice you make behind the wheel matters’

Police say education and community engagement are particularly important because enforcement alone cannot prevent every dangerous decision made on the road.

Senior Constable Dowell said drivers needed to take responsibility for their behaviour every time they got behind the wheel.

“Every choice you make behind the wheel matters,” she said.

“Driving under the influence, speeding, driving distracted or while fatigued, or not wearing a seat belt puts your life and the lives of others at serious risk.”

She warned dangerous driving behaviours would not be tolerated, with motorists reminded they could encounter police “anywhere, anytime”.

The message from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit is simple: road safety ultimately begins with the individual choices made by every road user.

The free Community Rural Road Safety Event will be held in Park Street, Boonah, this Thursday from 9am until 11.30am.
