The Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit is teaming up with STAR Community Services and the Ipswich District Neighbourhood Watch Committee to host two free “Seniors Road Trip to Road Safety” workshops later this month.

The sessions, supported by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, aim to reduce road incidents involving older drivers. Statistics from the Transurban Road Safety Centre reveal that 175 Australians aged 65 and over die in car crashes each year, while more than 4,000 are hospitalised—most with serious chest injuries.

“These are sobering figures,” said Senior Constable Karen Sheedy. “We want to provide older drivers with practical tools and up-to-date road safety information to help keep them safe.”

Workshops will cover safe driving practices, current road rules, knowing when it’s time to hand in a licence, the Fatal Five road risks, standard drink awareness, and the PCYC Breaking the Cycle program.

Event details:

  • Ipswich Workshop: Tuesday 26 August, 10am–2pm at Ipswich Sports Club, 1A Sanford Road, Leichhardt.
  • Lowood Workshop: Thursday 28 August, 10am–2pm at STAR Community Services, 43 Park Street, Lowood.

Each event is free and includes a light meal, but places are limited to 40 attendees per workshop. RSVPs are required by 15 August.

Bookings can be made by calling 3821 6699 or emailing marketing@starct.org.au.

According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, 562 people have died on Australian roads so far this year—7.7% higher than in 2024—with May 2025’s toll up 36.5% on the five-year average. Police stress that avoiding the Fatal Five behaviours—speeding, drink or drug driving, failing to wear seatbelts, fatigue, and distraction—remains key to saving lives.
