Local actor and personality David Austin joined Glenn Smith and DJ Sparky on West Bremer Radio to discuss his latest project, the musical “The Drowsy Chaperone,” which promises to be a highlight in the “What’s On In Ipswich Theatre” calendar.
Austin, who stars as the “Man in Chair” in the musical, explained the unique concept of the show. “The story revolves around a man who feels blue and escapes into his favourite musical, ‘The Drowsy Chaperone.’ As he plays the record, the musical comes to life in his apartment, transforming his space into a vibrant stage,” he said.
Despite his prominent role, Austin humorously noted, “I’m in a musical, but I don’t sing,” a fact that drew laughter and relief from his co-hosts. The show features a talented cast, including Vivian Simpson, whose performance Austin praised as exceptional.
The production is set to take place at Fire Station 101, with tickets available through the Ipswich Civic Centre’s website. Austin expressed excitement about the venue, describing it as a “black box theatre” that offers an intimate and immersive experience for the audience.

The conversation also touched on Austin’s diverse background, including his past as a champion ice skater, ballet dancer, and model. His transition into theatre came about through an acting workshop at Ipswich Little Theatre, where he quickly landed a role in an Agatha Christie play.
As the discussion continued, Smith and Austin reminisced about past theatre experiences and the challenges of putting on a musical. “Musical theatre is hard to put on. Not just physically and mentally, but also cost-wise. You’ve got costumes, sets, lights, music, everything,” Austin said, highlighting the dedication and effort required for such productions.
Listeners were encouraged to secure their tickets soon, with the musical set to captivate audiences. “If this interview is anything to go by, it’s going to be a great show,” Brad concluded.
For those interested in experiencing “The Drowsy Chaperone” and supporting local theatre, tickets can be purchased through the Ipswich Civic Centre website. Don’t miss out on this exciting addition to the “What’s On In Ipswich Theatre” lineup.
