🏛️ Goodna Community Centre Reopens After 2022 Floods
Ipswich City Councillor Paul Tully has officially reopened the Goodna Community Centre, which was devastated during the 2022 floods. Formerly damaged in 2011 and then again last year, the revitalised centre in Lyard Street will now host a range of affordable wellness programs including yoga, boxing, pilates, and Zumba. “It’s been beautifully restored and is now a real asset for the community again,” Tully said.
🎉 Goodna Street Life Celebrates 10 Years of Vital Support
Community organisation Goodna Street Life celebrated its 10th anniversary, having provided more than 40,000 nights of accommodation and 43 tonnes of food in just the past year. “It’s a standout example of a grassroots organisation helping those in genuine need,” said Tully, noting that the council has contributed around $70,000 in support since 2016. The organisation plans to expand its food assistance to 100 tonnes per year.
🛝 Park Upgrades Across Camira and Goodna
Council crews are busy upgrading multiple parks in Division 2, including Pollard Park and Langley Park in Camira, with refreshed playground equipment, soft-fall surfaces, and new vegetation. Meanwhile, at Evan Marginson Park, Councillor Tully and colleague Nicole Jonic are taking a cost-effective approach to sun protection — opting to plant a fast-growing fig tree instead of installing an $80,000 shade sail. “We’re getting the same shade outcome for around $10,000,” he said.
🧤 A Nod to the Bees — and the Blues
Tully also shared his beekeeping insights, revealing that drone bees are ousted from hives during winter. “The females run the hive, and the males don’t survive the cold,” he joked. And on State of Origin, the lifelong Queenslander predicted a Maroons comeback after a game one loss. “We let them win the first one — now it’s our turn.”
🎪 Looking Ahead
With winter underway and the Rosewood Show and local community events in full swing, Councillor Tully encouraged residents to get involved and support one another during the colder months.
