Donna Cavanagh and Oggy Smith, known around Ipswich as the Oggsters, are already hard at work putting together their annual Christmas hampers.
In 2023, they’re aiming to create 230 hampers to support families at the Women’s Crisis Support Service, Hannah’s House, and Ipswich Assist. Each hamper contains a selection of non-perishable food items, essential for people who are starting over following trauma, homelessness or domestic violence.
The hampers also contain toiletries such as combs, brushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap and first aid items, as well as Christmas gifts for each recipient. The Women’s Crisis Centre, Hannah’s House and Ipswich Assist provide a list of recipients with their age and gender listed, so that hampers can be tailored to suit the recipient.
This year, the Oggsters will be putting together 65 hampers for the Women’s Crisis Support Service, 35 for Hannah’s House, 90 hampers for homeless people and an additional 10 hampers especially for families dealing with homelessness.
The Ipswich Showgrounds has once again donated a space in the Events Centre, giving the Oggsters and their army of volunteers somewhere to put together and store the hampers.
Kicking off on Monday 27 November and finishing on Thursday 21 December, they’ve put the call out to the Ipswich community to donate non-perishable food basics, Christmas gifts for all ages, Christmas treats including sweets, chips, cakes, nuts, napkins, disposable plates and crockery, bonbons, baby goods and pet products.
There are three dedicated drop off points around Ipswich who are already receiving donations – HIIT Republic Yamanto, Vintage Advantage and West Bremer Radio (both in Brisbane Street).
Donations can also be dropped off at the Ipswich Showgrounds from 27 November to 21 December, between 8am and 4pm.
