In an effort to combat vehicle-related crimes, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy has emphasised the importance of securing vehicle number plates with anti-theft screws on West Bremer Radio. During a recent Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Sheedy shared valuable advice on how to protect rego plates and prevent opportunistic thefts.

“An opportunistic thief will steal a vehicle and or number plates whenever and wherever there is a slight opportunity not to get caught,” Sheedy explained. She urged the community to take proactive steps in securing their number plates to deter such crimes.
Anti-theft screws are a simple yet effective solution. These specialized screws can be purchased from any hardware store. They come in either a universal pack or a set specific to a vehicle model. While it is possible to install these screws oneself, Sheedy recommended having them fitted by a reputable car service center, as a special screwdriver is required for installation.
In addition to securing number plates, Senior Constable Sheedy offered several preventative strategies to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of property theft:
- Secure Your Vehicle: Always lock all doors and close windows. Even if parked in a garage, ensure the car is locked and secured.
- Remove Keys: Never leave keys in the ignition. Store both original and spare keys away from the car and garage.
- Park Wisely: Choose well-lit areas for parking.
- Install Security Devices: Consider fitting a car alarm, immobilizer, ignition shield, or other security devices.
- Use Anti-Theft Screws: Secure your registration plates with these screws to prevent them from being stolen.
For additional information on vehicle and property security, residents are encouraged to visit the safety and prevention crime page on the Queensland Police website or contact the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit at 3817-1351.
“Let’s beat the sneak and secure your property and vehicle now to make sure that you don’t give any opportunistic thief the chance to steal your vehicle or break into your house,” Sheedy concluded.
Taking these preventative measures can significantly reduce the risk of vehicle-related thefts, contributing to a safer community.
