Ipswich City Council is set to recognise its top athletes, sports teams, and artists with two annual events: the Ipswich Sports Awards and the Ipswich Art Awards. Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen expressed enthusiasm for these events, highlighting the community’s dedication to sport and the arts.

The Ipswich Sports Awards, scheduled for next Wednesday, will celebrate the city’s best athletes, coaches, and volunteers. “We’re incredibly proud of the talent we’re seeing,” said Madsen, noting nominees like Ipswich High Rugby League’s Shailam Suoso, who’s already gaining attention as a potential standout in women’s rugby league. Track athlete Gout Gout, who recently inked a major endorsement deal, is also among the celebrated talents. “Seeing young athletes like Gout reach global levels of recognition is a big source of pride for Ipswich,” Madsen added.

In the arts, the 2024 Ipswich Art Awards will officially open this evening, showcasing over 1,000 entries. Public viewing begins Saturday, November 2, and will run through to November 9 at the Nicholas Street Precinct. “The quality of work is on par with professional galleries,” said Madsen, noting the opportunities the event provides for emerging artists to build their profiles. “The awards help artists gain visibility and grow their careers.”

In addition to these awards, Madsen confirmed that road upgrades on Ripley Road are progressing, with council working closely with state authorities and landowners to secure necessary road-widening properties. This follows a recent decision by council to renew a partnership with Just Sports and Fitness to manage the Redbank Collingwood Park Sports Complex, ensuring local residents continue to have access to fitness programs, gymnastics, and school holiday activities.

The awards season, road upgrades, and recreational opportunities underscore Ipswich’s commitment to supporting both current residents and future growth, fostering a vibrant community.
