Ipswich City Council is making strides in fostering community inclusivity and addressing infrastructure needs. Mayor Teresa Harding highlighted several key initiatives in a recent interview, reflecting the council’s commitment to serving its diverse and growing population. Mayor Harding talked about this on West Bremer Radio this morning
One significant agenda item is the addition of an Islamic burial section at Stone Quarry Cemetery in Jibra Pili. Mayor Harding emphasized the importance of respecting all faiths and catering to Ipswich’s multicultural community. “The leaders of the Islamic community approached the council about creating a burial area for our Islamic residents,” she said. The council is currently reviewing community feedback on the cemetery’s final designs.
Additionally, Ipswich City Council is addressing off-street parking regulations on Parkland Drive in Springfield Central. The area, near a community center, has seen parking issues, particularly affecting parents attending a baby clinic. The council is seeking community feedback on the temporary parking regulations and will make a final decision in an upcoming ordinary council meeting.
Mayor Harding also discussed the “We Can’t Wait” campaign, advocating for fairer transport funding for Ipswich. Despite the city’s rapid growth, Ipswich receives one of the lowest investments per resident for transport and roads. The campaign calls for funding for critical projects, including the Ipswich to Springfield train line, a second bridge crossing, and improvements to the Anembili interchange on the Cunningham Highway. “We are asking all political parties and candidates to consider fairer transport funding for the people of Ipswich,” said Harding.
In other positive news, the Nicholas Street precinct was recognized with two awards in urban design from the Queensland Government, highlighting the importance of good design in shaping communities. The precinct has seen over 20 new businesses open since its redevelopment, with more on the way.
Lastly, the council successfully hosted its inaugural new business breakfast, in collaboration with the Ipswich Region and Greater Springfield Chambers of Commerce. The event aimed to connect new businesses with council, state government resources, and networking opportunities.
Ipswich City Council continues to demonstrate its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through thoughtful planning and community engagement.
