As the summer sports season gets underway, cricket has made a welcome return in Ipswich. On The Breakky Club this Thursday, West Bremer Radio‘s voice of cricket, Andrew Catton, joined the show to discuss the start of the 2024-2025 cricket season and the performance of local teams.

The first-grade men’s team had a challenging start to their campaign. They began with a tough match against Northern Suburbs on Saturday, falling short in the opener. However, they quickly bounced back with impressive victories over University and South Brisbane on Sunday. One of the standout performances came from import Lachlan Shaw, who scored a remarkable 61 runs off just 27 balls. Despite the strong start, the team faced another setback on Monday night due to several players being unavailable, resulting in a loss. “Playing four games in three days and securing two wins is just about a pass mark,” said Catton. “They’ll be looking to build momentum this weekend.”
The women’s team also showed promise as they kicked off their season. They secured a win against the Gold Coast in their first match but faced tough competition over the weekend. The team lost to Wynnum and narrowly missed out on victories against Sunshine Coast and Western Suburbs. “They made a really good fist of it against Wests, coming close to chasing down 165,” Catton noted. Despite these challenges, the women’s team displayed determination and skill, setting the stage for a strong season ahead.
Looking forward, this weekend promises more exciting cricket action in Ipswich. The first-grade women will play at Ivor Marsden on Ray Walker Oval on Sunday morning, followed by the second-grade men’s match in the afternoon. “It’s really exciting for us to have Premier Grade cricket back at Ivor,” said Catton, expressing his enthusiasm for the upcoming games.
As the season progresses, fans can look forward to regular updates from Andrew Catton every Thursday on The Breakky Club, keeping them informed about the latest in Ipswich cricket.
