Ipswich police are urging bicycle owners to take extra precautions following a rise in bike thefts across the region.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Karen Sheedy from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit said police are recovering many stolen bikes but struggling to return them to owners due to a lack of identification.

“Many of these stolen bikes are found by police, but without identifying markings, they never make it back to their owners,” Senior Constable Sheedy said.

How to Protect Your Bike

Police are reminding residents that even well-secured bikes can be targeted by determined thieves. Here are some key safety tips:
✅ Always lock your bike, even if leaving it for just a moment.
✅ Use a high-quality U-lock, which is harder to break than cheap chains or cables.
✅ Secure both wheels and the frame if possible.
✅ Store bikes in locked sheds or indoors when at home.
✅ Remove accessories such as lights, pumps, and helmets when parking your bike.

Make Your Bike Identifiable

To increase the chances of recovering a stolen bike, owners should:
🔹 Record the make, model, colour, serial number, purchase details, and any unique features.
🔹 Take clear photos of the bike, including its serial number.
🔹 Engrave your bike with an identifying mark.
