Ipswich Police are using Queensland Road Safety Week to shine a spotlight on local efforts to reduce crashes and save lives on the region’s roads.
Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy said the Ipswich Police District Road Safety Committee has introduced the Ipswich Road Safety Awards to recognise individuals, groups and organisations making a difference.
“These awards highlight the programs, initiatives and achievements across Ipswich that are helping reduce road trauma,” she said.
The awards ceremony will be held at 10am on August 27 in the Dandiri Room at the Ipswich City Council building, with Supercars driver and motorsport champion Todd Hazelwood appearing as guest speaker.
Throughout Road Safety Week, police and volunteers will be out in the community promoting the importance of safer driving. The Queensland Police Service (QPS) continues to adopt a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe driving while engaging with road users to encourage better decision-making.
Data shows serious crashes can be significantly reduced when motorists avoid the “Fatal Five” behaviours — speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, fatigue and distraction.
“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Senior Constable Sheedy said. “We encourage people to talk with family and friends about safe driving so that everyone reaches their destination safely.”
