Ipswich police are urging residents to take extra care on the roads as National Road Safety Week approaches, with two local community events planned to raise awareness and promote safer driving behaviour.

Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit joined West Bremer Radio to highlight the importance of the initiative, which runs from 11 to 18 May. The annual campaign, organised by the Safer Australian Roads and Highway (SARAH) Group and supported by the Australian Road Safety Foundation, aims to reduce road trauma and fatalities across the country.

“This week is about reminding everyone that road safety is everyone’s responsibility—not just during Road Safety Week, but all year round,” Senior Constable Sheedy said.

Two free community events will be held locally. The first will take place on Tuesday, 13 May from 10am to 2pm at Riverlink Shopping Centre (outside The Reject Shop), focusing on the theme “The Road to Zero.” The second event, “Road Safety for Every Age,” will be held at Boonah Library on Thursday, 15 May from 9am to 1pm.

Both events are being supported by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Ipswich City Council, PCYC Ipswich, and the Queensland Motorcycle Council.

Residents are encouraged to take the National Road Safety Week pledge at http://www.streetsmartz.org.au, committing to actions such as removing driving distractions, never using mobile phones while driving, and respecting all road users, particularly vulnerable workers and pedestrians.

“The goal is zero road deaths—not just during Road Safety Week, but every day,” said Constable Sheedy.
