As car theft continues to be a rising issue across Queensland, the Ipswich Police are ramping up community messaging around vehicle security, warning locals not to become easy targets for opportunistic thieves.

Senior Constable Karen Sheedy joined Damien on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment this week to offer timely advice on how residents can better protect their vehicles — and their peace of mind.

“Most thefts from or of vehicles are opportunistic,” Sheedy explained. “The inconvenience of losing your car, or even just your keys, can significantly disrupt your day.”

Residents are urged to always remove valuables from their cars, particularly home and car keys, garage remotes, and personal belongings. Even small items can attract unwanted attention.

Sheedy also encouraged locals to conduct their own vehicle risk assessments. “If you can find a weak spot, so can a thief,” she said. Additional security measures like sensor lights, secure fencing, and CCTV can all help reduce the risk.

She listed several practical precautions, including:

  • Parking in well-lit, secure areas
  • Locking both your garage and vehicle
  • Using steering wheel locks or engine immobilizers
  • Installing GPS trackers
  • Securing number plates with anti-theft screws
  • Avoiding key tags with personal or vehicle details

A light-hearted suggestion to leave a Doberman in the driver’s seat for added security rounded out the chat — though police still recommend more conventional methods.

With car-related crimes on the rise, Sheedy’s message is clear: Lock it or lose it.
