Despite repeated warnings, Ipswich residents are still falling victim to theft, prompting local police to reinforce their “Lock It or Lose It” message.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Shantelle Dowell urged the community to secure their homes, vehicles, and property to deter offenders.
Simple Steps to Protect Your Home
Police recommend conducting a home security audit to identify weaknesses. Residents should:
- Install security screens on doors and windows
- Use sensor lighting for increased visibility
- Trim trees and shrubs to eliminate hiding spots
- Lock up valuable outdoor items like bikes, ladders, and tools
- Fit garages and sheds with secure locks
For vehicles, police stress the importance of locking doors, securing number plates with anti-theft screws, and parking in well-lit areas. Older cars can benefit from an engine immobiliser or steering wheel lock.
Mark Your Valuables
Engraving, microdot technology, and keeping receipts can also help police return stolen items if recovered.
“If we can identify stolen property, it’s much easier to get it back to its rightful owner,” Dowell explained.
