Ipswich Police are urging local tradies and residents to step up security measures following a recent spike in tool thefts across the region.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Karen Sheedy warned that thieves are targeting easily accessible tools and equipment from work vehicles, job sites, sheds, and homes.
“Offenders will usually act on easy or tempting opportunities, especially when it’s obvious no one is around,” said Sheedy. “For tradies, losing tools can mean losing work – or even your job.”
🎯 Key Targets:
- Unsecured toolboxes in ute trays and trailers
- Open garages and sheds
- Tools left in front or back yards
- Trailers not immobilised or parked in plain sight
🛠️ Police Security Tips Include:
- Always lock toolboxes, garages, and sheds
- Anchor toolboxes to vehicles with durable locks
- Immobilise trailers when not in use
- Park vehicles out of sight when possible
- Photograph tools, record serial numbers, and keep receipts
- Engrave or mark tools to deter resale and assist in recovery
“Lock it or lose it,” Sheedy emphasised. “Even if you’re just stepping away for a moment, that’s all it takes for someone to strike.”
The Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit is encouraging residents to visit www.police.qld.gov.au/crimeprevention for more safety tips, or to call the unit directly on 3817 1351.
“We want to make sure both residents and tradespeople stay one step ahead of these opportunistic criminals,” Sheedy added.
Residents are also reminded to report suspicious behaviour to Policelink at 131 444 or online at police.qld.gov.au.
