The historic Ipswich Old Courthouse is being promoted as an important cultural venue for local arts groups, with community leaders encouraging more residents to make use of the heritage space.

Speaking on a local arts program, Dorothy from the Old Courthouse Ipswich Cultural Association (OCHICA) said the building continues to play a key role in supporting creative and cultural activities across the city.

Heritage Building With Cultural Purpose

Built in 1859 while Ipswich was still part of New South Wales, the courthouse remains one of the city’s oldest public buildings. The site once housed several courtrooms and holding cells, remnants of which can still be seen today.

Over time the building has transitioned from a legal facility to a cultural venue, now hosting a range of community groups and creative organisations.

Home to Multiple Arts Groups

Current tenants at the courthouse include the Ipswich Art Society, the Ipswich Photographic Society, the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company, Ipswich Mini Crafters and the Minor Chords barbershop choir.

The venue provides rehearsal spaces, meeting rooms and exhibition areas for these groups, allowing them to develop performances, workshops and creative projects.

“It’s a space that was always intended to support culture in the city,” Dorothy said.

Venue Available for Community Use

While the courthouse is primarily used by resident arts organisations, it is also available for community groups to hire for events, rehearsals and activities.

Recent events have included theatre workshops and creative gatherings, demonstrating the building’s flexibility as a cultural venue.

Encouraging More Community Participation

OCHICA representatives say they hope to see more cultural organisations and creative groups using the courthouse in the future.

“We’d love to see the building filled with activity again,” Dorothy said. “It’s a wonderful heritage venue and a great place for the arts community to come together.”
