West Bremer Radio’s All Ability Hour welcomed a special group of guests on Saturday afternoon, featuring members of the Focal Life Skills Cooking Group. This initiative helps individuals with disabilities gain valuable cooking skills and independence.

In the absence of regular host Patty, who was away on a cruise, Dan took the lead. The radio show highlighted the incredible achievements of the group, with participants sharing their experiences and love for cooking.

Dan explained that Focal runs the Life Skills Cooking Group on Mondays and Fridays, and the demand is so high they may soon open a third day. “They’re learning basic cooking skills, but they’re also picking up culinary techniques, making their own recipes, and keeping recipe books with pictures,” said Dan.

Each participant introduced themselves and shared their favorite dishes. Lachlan, a member of the group, expressed his love for making nachos and cheesecake, while Montana mentioned her passion for Thai corn and cutting vegetables. Amy enjoyed making pasta and pizza, and Travis loved preparing chicken salads.

The segment also covered what each participant had learned, from grating cheese to peeling carrots, all skills essential for independent living. Lachlan particularly enjoyed peeling potatoes, while Amy spoke about her love for marinating chicken.

In a second group, Liam, Max, Darrell, and David shared their favorite meals, ranging from pizza and burgers to casseroles and Japanese curry. Each participant talked about the valuable skills they were gaining, with Max showing his expertise in budgeting and shopping for ingredients.

The All Ability Hour is a wonderful platform showcasing how Focal’s cooking group not only teaches essential life skills but also builds confidence and independence in a fun and engaging environment.
