A major upgrade is planned for the Paperbark Flats Picnic Area in Redbank Plains, with Ipswich City Council unveiling a concept design aimed at transforming the popular site for the thousands of visitors who enjoy it each month.

Ipswich City Council Environment and Sustainability Chairperson Councillor Jim Madden said the upgrade would significantly improve the experience for residents and visitors accessing the nearby White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Estate.

“Funded through the Ipswich Enviroplan initiative, this upgrade will turn a basic day-use area into an engaging space where families and friends can explore and enjoy time in nature,” Cr Madden said.

The concept design includes a substantial increase in car parking, new barbecues and a children’s discovery nature play area. Existing facilities will also be improved, with upgrades planned for toilet amenities, clearer signage and wayfinding, and safer, more accessible pedestrian access.

Cr Madden said environmental considerations had been central to the design process, with new infrastructure largely confined to areas already cleared of vegetation, including the nearby Powerlink easement.

Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen said visitor numbers at Paperbark Flats had grown significantly since the site first opened decades ago.

“With the rapid growth of Redbank Plains and surrounding suburbs, it’s vital that we provide modern, accessible facilities that match community needs,” Cr Madsen said.

Division 1 Councillor Pye Augustine said the area supported a wide range of activities, including bushwalking, horse riding and mountain biking.

“This upgrade will create a more welcoming environment for visitors and strengthen the community’s connection to nature and the Enviroplan program,” Cr Augustine said.

The concept design will be open for community feedback via Shape Your Ipswich from Friday 9 January to Sunday 1 February at shapeyouripswich.com.au.
