Ipswich has solidified its place on the cultural map with the arrival of a $116 million Mark Rothko painting, “1957 No. 20”, on display at the Ipswich Art Gallery. This masterpiece, loaned from the National Gallery of Australia as part of the federal government’s Sharing the National Collection program, is accompanied by two $20 million Agnes Martin works, forming the foundation of the gallery’s Arriving Slowly: Exploring the Abstract exhibition.

Mayor Theresa Harding expressed her excitement: “This is an incredible coup for Ipswich. These significant works, alongside pieces from local artists like Lincoln Austin, will attract thousands of visitors.” The Rothko and Martin works will remain on display until 2026, while the accompanying exhibition will run until February 2025.

Christmas Magic in Ipswich

As the festive season approaches, Ipswich is lighting up with joy. The Christmas in Ipswich program is in full swing, featuring caroling events, dazzling light displays, and the annual Letters to Santa initiative. Children can visit Ipswich Libraries or UB’s Milk Bar to send their Christmas wishes to the North Pole.

Adding to the cheer, Mayor Harding has launched the 2024 Christmas Card Competition, inviting schoolchildren to illustrate what Christmas in Ipswich means to them. “It’s a chance for local talent to shine,” Harding said. Prizes include $200 for the winner and $100 for the runner-up in junior and senior categories.

Nicholas Street Precinct Expands

The newly opened Hoyts cinema and entertainment hub General Public have already drawn crowds, and the announcement of Mini Bounce, a play space for children aged six months to six years, adds even more family-friendly appeal.

Mayor Harding concluded with a clear statement: “I’m focused on Ipswich and will not be running for the seat of Blair. My commitment is to our community and its bright future.”
