Mpower You, a disability support service based in Ipswich, is making strides in offering employment assistance to individuals with disabilities through the NDIS-funded “Finding and Keeping a Job” program. Darryl, an employment specialist from Mpower You, joined the All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio to discuss the service’s expanding role in helping people with disabilities gain employment and build career skills.

Mpower You provides a wide range of services, including support coordination, community access, and independent living support. However, the focus of their employment support program stands out as a key offering for people of working age, thanks to recent NDIS changes that now extend employment assistance beyond just school-leavers.

“Employment support used to be limited to school-leavers, but now it’s available to anyone of working age looking for help in securing a job,” Darryl explained. “Whether it’s their first job or a career change, we are here to assist.”

The process at Mpower You involves a five-step approach, including discovering the person’s work history, identifying skills, and developing a plan to prepare them for employment. The organization also offers training in key areas such as time management, communication, and interview preparation.

Darryl emphasized the growing openness of employers to hire people with disabilities, noting that many companies are introducing policies to foster a more diverse workforce. “It’s still a bit of a hard sell, but employers are much more open now than they were five years ago,” Darryl shared.

For more information, Mpower You can be reached via their website at mpoweryou.com.au or by phone at 0476 077 717. Empower You remains dedicated to enhancing the employment prospects and skills of Ipswich’s disability community.
