The Ipswich Police District Road Safety Awards are returning on Wednesday, August 27, with nominations now officially open for individuals and organisations helping to make local roads safer.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy encouraged the community to get involved by recognising local heroes whose efforts contribute to reducing road trauma across the district.

“If you know someone making a real difference in road safety—whether it’s through education, innovation or collaboration—we want to hear about them,” said Constable Sheedy.

The awards aim to highlight and reward projects, campaigns, and individuals that promote safe driving and help lower the risk of crashes and fatalities on Ipswich roads.

🏆 Four Award Criteria:

Nominees will be judged based on:

  • Achievement: Implementation of impactful road safety projects.
  • Sustainability: Long-term benefits to the community.
  • Collaboration: Working with other organisations for shared road safety outcomes.
  • Innovation: Creative approaches to reducing road trauma.

Nominations close at 4pm on Friday, July 11, and forms can be downloaded from the Ipswich MyPolice website. Entries should be submitted via email to dcpc.ipswich@police.qld.gov.au.

Alternatively, community members can request a form or more information by calling the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit on (07) 3817 1351.

🏛️ Awards Ceremony:

Winners will be recognised at a special ceremony at the Dandiri Room, Level 1, Ipswich City Council building on Nicholas Street.

🚗 Road Safety Is Everyone’s Responsibility

Constable Sheedy also reminded drivers of the Fatal Five contributing factors in serious crashes:

  1. Speeding
  2. Drink or drug driving
  3. Fatigue
  4. Distraction
  5. Not wearing seatbelts

“Road safety takes a whole community,” said Sheedy. “Let’s recognise the people who are out there helping to keep us all safer.”
