As Term Two kicks off across Ipswich, local police are reminding motorists to take extra care around school zones to ensure the safety of children returning to classrooms.

Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit issued a public warning on West Bremer Radio this week, encouraging drivers to “stand up for road safety by setting a safe pace around schools.”

Most school zones across Ipswich operate with a 40km/h speed limit between 7am–9am and 2pm–4pm, although some zones enforce the limit all day from 7am to 4pm. “Motorists need to be alert, especially during pick-up and drop-off times when roads are most congested,” Sheedy said.

Drivers are urged to keep an eye out for students travelling by foot, bike, car, or public transport, and to adhere to all road rules and signage. This includes no stopping zones, yellow edge lines, school crossings, and loading bays, which are heavily monitored by police during school terms.

“Police will be patrolling school zones to ensure speed limits and parking regulations are followed. The goal is simple—keep our children safe,” Sheedy said.

Parents and caregivers are also reminded to avoid distractions while behind the wheel, particularly near school gates where pedestrian traffic is high.

“Let’s work together to keep Term Two safe for everyone,” Sheedy said.
