Ipswich Police are calling on local motorists to help deter crime by fitting their vehicles with anti-theft number plate screws, following a rise in opportunistic thefts across the region.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Crime Watch segment, Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy said stolen number plates continue to be used in a range of illegal activities, including fuel drive-offs, toll evasion and more serious crimes.
“An opportunistic thief will steal a vehicle or number plates wherever they spot a chance,” Senior Constable Sheedy said. “We’re reminding everyone to lock their cars and homes and secure their number plates with anti-theft screws.”
The screws — available at most hardware stores — are specially designed to be tamper-resistant and can only be installed or removed with an authorised tool.
“They’re inexpensive, and in many cases, service centres can install them for you,” she added.
🛡️ Police Tips to Prevent Vehicle Theft:
- Lock all doors and close all windows, even when parking at home.
- Never leave keys in the ignition — store both sets away from the car and garage.
- Install motion-activated sensor lighting or CCTV if possible.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Consider additional security like car alarms, immobilisers or steering wheel locks.
- Etch your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) onto glass surfaces to deter re-identification.
- For work vans, double-check sliding doors are locked.
🚔 Why It Matters:
Stolen plates can be used in crimes where the vehicle owner is falsely implicated. By securing plates with anti-theft screws, residents reduce the likelihood of becoming an unknowing accomplice.
