Carb cravings aren’t a sign of weakness — they’re your body’s way of sending a message, according to Ipswich wellness coach Loz Antonenko, who joined West Bremer Radio’s Brekkie Club this week to tackle one of the most common struggles people face with food.
“Cravings don’t mean that you’re weak. They’re biology, not bad behaviour,” Loz said. “Low sleep, low protein, or dehydration are often the triggers. When that happens, your brain is basically screaming at you: ‘carbs or chaos!’”
Loz explained that instead of blaming yourself, small changes can make all the difference. Her first tip: add protein and water before sugar, giving your body what it may actually be asking for.
She also warned that stress makes people “super snacky,” thanks to the stress hormone cortisol, which ramps up appetite. “One bad email and suddenly half a packet of Shapes is gone,” she joked. Loz suggested a minute of deep breathing before heading to the pantry as a simple reset.
Her third tip? Don’t over-restrict.
“The more you tell yourself no chocolate, no snacks, the louder your brain sings the Cadbury theme song,” she said. Instead, she recommended allowing flexible treats to prevent binge cycles.
Loz shared that she enjoys a small piece of sugar-free chocolate every day alongside a cold-pressed coffee, calling it her daily “dopamine hit.”
“Instead of beating yourself up for craving carbs, listen to what your body is really asking for,” she said. “Carbs aren’t the enemy — moderation is key.”
For those wanting more, Loz is hosting a free online masterclass on September 8 titled Food Guilt Can F Right Off, which she says will “change how you eat forever — no guilt trips required.”
