Ipswich City Council has announced an exciting new partnership with the Brisbane Lions, aiming to boost local sports and community engagement. Mayor Teresa Harding recently discussed the collaboration on West Bremer Radio‘s Brekkie Club, highlighting the numerous benefits for Ipswich residents.

The partnership kicked off with a season opener at Limestone Park, where the Brisbane Lions played North Melbourne. The event featured Brisbane Lions players Dakota Davidson and Kate Lutkins, along with Ipswich Eagles players. “It’s fantastic to see this partnership come to life,” said Mayor Harding. “We have a strong sports culture in Ipswich, and this collaboration will provide significant exposure and opportunities for our local athletes.”

Beyond promoting sports, the partnership includes educational opportunities, community health programs, and dedicated fan days to support the Brisbane Lions’ women’s team. “This isn’t just about advertising Ipswich as a tourism destination,” Mayor Harding emphasised. “We’re creating pathways for aspiring athletes and sports administrators, and we’ll even have state and national championships hosted right here in Ipswich.”

In addition to the sports partnership, Ipswich City Council is launching a “shop top living” initiative to revitalize the city’s CBD. The program offers financial incentives to property owners to convert under-utilised spaces above shops into residential areas. “We’re aiming to increase vibrancy in our city centre by encouraging more people to live, work, and play in Ipswich,” Mayor Harding explained.

The council is also addressing community concerns about swooping birds during breeding season, advising residents to wear sunglasses and hats, and avoid known breeding areas.

In light of Councillor David Cullen’s recent resignation due to health issues, a special council meeting has been scheduled for Thursday to decide on the next steps, which may include a by-election or appointing the runner-up from the last election.

With these initiatives, Ipswich City Council continues to focus on community development and engagement, promising exciting times ahead for local residents.
