A long-awaited overhaul of Purga School Road Bridge will begin on Monday, July 28, marking a major milestone in Ipswich City Council’s investment in infrastructure across Division 1.
Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen confirmed the $7.3 million project, funded in part by $5 million from the federal Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program, will replace the ageing 38-metre single-lane timber bridge with a modern, two-lane concrete structure.
“It’s a one-in-a-hundred-year type project,” Madsen said. “Residents have been calling for this for a long time. This is about safety and capacity for growing communities.”
The bridge forms a crucial link for residents in Purga, Peak Crossing, and southern parts of the city. The road will be closed in both directions for approximately eight months, with detours in place. Property access for locals will be maintained.
Ripley Road Widening and Major Footpath, Park Upgrades
Also included in the Division 1 budget is the first stage of Ripley Road’s long-anticipated upgrade, with $9 million allocated to widen the road to four lanes between the Cunningham Highway and Fischer Road.
“Anyone who travels through Ripley knows it’s long overdue,” Madsen said.
Other key budget items include:
- $1.6 million for footpath maintenance.
- $760,000 for park upgrades, including $100,000 for Bremer Vale Park in Raceview.
- $550,000 to expand the Redbank Plains Library car park.
- $100,000 to improve lighting at the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct in Willowbank.
Champions Way Drainage Project on Track
Madsen also provided an update on drainage upgrades along Champions Way, aimed at reducing flood risk. Works began in June and are progressing well, with culvert excavation scheduled to begin August 11. Completion is expected by January 2026.
“We thank residents for their patience as we deliver these essential upgrades,” he said.
Finally, Councillor Madsen gave a shout-out to the Ipswich Force basketball team, who are eyeing a finals spot after a strong season.
“They’re in the top six – a great effort, and we’re all cheering them on,” he said.
