The Ipswich RSL Sub Branch has issued a heartfelt call to the community, seeking urgent support to help restore the historic Soldiers Memorial Hall, which is facing major structural concerns.

The floor inside the much-loved hall is sinking and requires immediate repair, with an estimated funding shortfall of around $250,000. While engineers have confirmed the building remains structurally sound, without urgent works the hall’s future is at risk.

Built by the people of Ipswich to honour service, sacrifice and remembrance, the Soldiers Memorial Hall has stood for generations as a place of reflection, commemoration and community gathering.

“This hall is more than bricks and timber,” a spokesperson said. “It holds the stories of our veterans, our families and our city. We want it to stand strong for another 100 years.”

The RSL has been working closely with Ipswich City Council and engineers to plan repairs, which are scheduled to begin in November, after Remembrance Day.

However, fundraising has proven challenging. The sub-branch has explained that:

  • Donations are not tax-deductible
  • Previous GoFundMe campaigns have not been successful
  • Welfare funds cannot be used, as the hall is not owned by the RSL
  • Grant funding will be pursued but may not cover the full cost

Despite these challenges, the RSL is determined to preserve the hall with community support.

Local businesses and residents are being encouraged to contribute in any way they can, with organisers stressing that no donation is too small.

“A certificate of gratitude will be provided, and receipts can be issued,” the spokesperson said.

Ipswich City Council remains the caretaker of the building, but the RSL says its heart belongs to the community and to those who served.

Residents and businesses interested in helping are invited to comment on the RSL’s social media post, with bank details to be shared in a follow-up message.

“This hall exists because the people of Ipswich built it,” the spokesperson said. “Now, we are asking the community to stand with us again — to protect a place of remembrance, respect and pride.”

Community members are encouraged to get involved and help ensure the Soldiers Memorial Hall continues to serve future generations.
