Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding says the city has entered 2026 on a positive note, following a busy Australia Day period, record-breaking Christmas celebrations and strong community participation in council programs.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio, Mayor Harding said 285 new citizens were officially welcomed to Ipswich on Australia Day during a ceremony at the Civic Centre.
“It was a very hot day, so we were grateful to be in air-conditioned comfort,” Mayor Harding said. “It was wonderful to see so many people choose Ipswich as their new home.”
The Mayor also reflected on the recent announcement of the city’s Australia Day award recipients, which were revealed a week before the national holiday to maximise community recognition.
Ali Brigginshaw was named Ipswich Citizen of the Year, while Harrison Rule received Junior Citizen of the Year honours for his extensive charity and community work.
“These awards highlight the incredible dedication of people in our community,” Mayor Harding said. “The standard of nominees this year was very high.”
Council has also released attendance figures from the 2025 Christmas in Ipswich Festival, confirming record participation. More than 51,000 people visited the St Nicholas Precinct over 10 nights, making it the most successful year on record. Around 3,500 residents attended the city Christmas tree lighting, while 93 homes entered the Christmas lights competition.
Mayor Harding said council also supported community and church carol events across the city with more than $82,000 in funding.
Looking ahead, residents are being encouraged to take part in council’s Active and Healthy program, which offers free and low-cost fitness activities. More than 31,000 people participated last financial year, a 27 per cent increase.
The Mayor confirmed Ipswich City Council will hold its first ordinary meeting of the year this week, with major projects including upgrades to the Ipswich Nature Centre and the Springfield Parkway duplication set for discussion.
Council meetings are open to the public and streamed online via Ipswich City Council TV on YouTube.
“Strong community engagement is what makes Ipswich such a great place to live,” Mayor Harding said.
