Ipswich’s strong community spirit has been on full display, with local fundraisers, grassroots businesses and volunteers making a significant impact across the region.

Division 4 Councillor David Martin said the past few weeks had highlighted the generosity and resilience of the local community, even amid ongoing cost of living pressures.

Local Business Success Story

A simple roadside banana stall has grown into a small local success story, with “Sam the Banana Man” now operating 11 locations across Ipswich.

Selling bananas for $2.50 per kilogram via an honour system, the business has become popular among residents looking for affordable produce.

“It’s great to see a local creating something that’s helping people at a time when grocery prices are rising,” Cr Martin said.

Sporting Community Rallies for Injured Youth

The Ipswich sporting community also rallied around a young local, Eli, who was injured in a recent incident in Goodna.

A fundraising event at Norths Tigers Rugby League Club attracted around 200 attendees and raised more than $20,000 to support Eli and others affected.

Additional support came from Ipswich Jets captain Blake Brien, who raised further funds through a charity head shave.

Cancer Fundraiser Raises Thousands

At Sandy Gallop Golf Course, nearly 150 players took part in a fundraising event organised by two local sisters, Carly and Jodie.

The event raised close to $28,000 for Cure Cancer, supporting vital medical research.

Cr Martin said the result was remarkable for a single-day community event.

Celebrating Local Women

Ipswich also marked International Women’s Day by recognising the contributions of women across the community.

Cr Martin paid tribute to long-time volunteers including Rita Langer, who has dedicated decades of service to local sporting clubs and Meals on Wheels.

Other community leaders and volunteers were also acknowledged for their contributions in areas such as education, sport, charity work and food relief programs.

Councillors Staying Connected

Residents will have further opportunities to raise local issues through a series of mobile council offices held across Division 4, including in Brassall, Rosewood and surrounding suburbs.

Cr Martin said staying connected with the community remained a priority.

“We’re out and about as much as we can because that’s how we understand what people need and how we can help,” he said.

He added that Ipswich continues to “punch above its weight” when it comes to community support, with residents consistently stepping up to help those in need.
