Ipswich MP Jennifer Howard has raised concerns about growing cost of living pressures, potential job cuts in the rail sector and public transport challenges affecting local residents.
Fuel Prices and Cost of Living Bite
Ms Howard said families across Ipswich are feeling the strain of rising fuel costs, with some motorists reporting diesel prices reaching as high as $3 per litre.
She warned there may be elements of price gouging in the market and urged residents not to panic buy fuel.
“There’s no need to stockpile — just purchase what you normally would so everyone can access what they need,” she said.
The Federal Government, led by Anthony Albanese, has announced a coordinated national response to the fuel situation, including calls for states to appoint fuel envoys.
Concerns Over Rail Job Cuts
Ms Howard also criticised reports that up to 700 station workers could be cut from Queensland Rail under the state government.
She said the move could leave many suburban stations unstaffed after 1pm on weekdays and without staff entirely on weekends.
“This raises serious concerns for safety, accessibility and support, particularly for people with disabilities and women travelling alone,” she said.
New Needle-Free Flu Vaccine for Children
Ahead of flu season, Ms Howard welcomed the rollout of a new needle-free flu vaccine for children aged two to five.
The vaccine, administered as a nasal spray, is expected to improve vaccination rates among young children.
“Last year was Queensland’s worst flu season in a decade, so it’s essential families take up the opportunity to protect their children,” she said.
Community Programs and Support
Ms Howard also highlighted several local initiatives, including the Alison Baden-Clay Foundation Empowering Futures Program, which helps women affected by domestic violence build skills and re-enter the workforce.
The program forms part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative and provides training in areas such as hospitality and workplace readiness.
She also attended a cancer research fundraising morning tea hosted by Vicky Doig, where local researchers presented new work aimed at improving treatment outcomes.
Community and Sporting Highlights
On a lighter note, Ms Howard praised local community events, including Ipswich Hockey’s open day, where a new mascot named “Zippy” was unveiled, and the season launch at Brothers Rugby League Club Ipswich.
She also marked International Women’s Day by speaking at a panel event at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, encouraging young women to pursue leadership opportunities.
Ms Howard encouraged residents to stay engaged with local issues and reach out to her office for support on state matters.
