The Boonah Playmakers are preparing to bring a classic comedy to local audiences with their upcoming production of Blithe Spirit by renowned playwright Noël Coward.

The production will be staged at the Boonah Cultural Centre for two performances only, with a Friday night show and a Saturday matinee scheduled for May 8 and 9.

The much-loved comedy follows novelist Charles Condomine, whose life becomes complicated when a séance conducted by eccentric medium Madame Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife.

Community Theatre Production

The play is being produced by the Boonah Playmakers, a local theatre group operating under the Boonah Cultural Foundation.

Julie, president of the foundation, said she had long wanted to stage the popular play and was pleased the group had embraced the idea.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while and the group has really enjoyed bringing it together,” she said.

Challenging Roles for Cast

Cast members Genevieve Roby and Susan Judge are taking on key roles in the production.

Roby plays Ruth Condomine, the second wife of Charles, while Judge portrays Madame Arcati, the eccentric spiritualist responsible for summoning the ghost.

Both actors said learning the script had been a rewarding challenge.

“In a world where everything is at your fingertips, memorising lines really stretches you,” Roby said.

Judge added that performing in theatre allows actors to fully immerse themselves in the story and characters.

Community Involvement Encouraged

The Boonah Playmakers are encouraging locals interested in theatre to get involved, with opportunities available both on stage and behind the scenes.

Tickets for the performances can be purchased online through the Creative Scenic Rim website or at local box offices in Boonah and Beaudesert.

Festival Plans Ahead

The group also plans to participate in the annual Boonah Arts Festival in early September, where they typically present theatre productions as part of the week-long celebration of arts and culture.

Organisers say the festival is known for its strong community involvement, featuring visual arts, writing competitions, fashion events and live performances.

The Boonah Playmakers hope their upcoming production of Blithe Spirit will draw audiences from across the Scenic Rim and Ipswich regions.
