Ipswich musician and DJ Gav Lewis, also known as DJ Gav, is continuing to build connections across the local music scene through vinyl DJ sets, live performances and a monthly social networking event.

Lewis will return to Stony Creek, formerly the Pumpyard, this Friday night with a DJ set featuring vinyl records, digital requests and local music from Ipswich artists. He said audiences are welcome to bring their own records, with the night designed to celebrate both retro sounds and local talent.

As well as DJing, Lewis is part of local band The Recepts, who are preparing to play at Studio 188 on June 18. The band describes its sound as psychedelic rock, drawing on experimental influences, layered keys, guitar and jazz-inspired drums.

The Recepts will perform alongside Brisbane band Gift Horse, with tickets available through the Ipswich Civic Centre website. Pre-sale tickets are $15, with children’s tickets also available, making the event accessible for families and all ages.

Lewis also runs Ipswich Alternatives, a monthly social mixer held on the last Wednesday of each month at the old flour mill. The gathering gives people a relaxed place to meet, share flyers, promote local events, play records and connect with others in the community.

He said the event was created after hearing from people who felt there were limited daytime social opportunities in Ipswich, particularly during the week.

With local music, community connection and live performance all in focus, Lewis says the aim is simple: give people more places to meet, listen, create and belong.
