Focal Community Services, a cornerstone of Ipswich’s disability support community, is celebrating 50 years of empowering individuals with disabilities. The milestone comes as Disability Action Week begins, bringing a renewed focus on inclusion and accessibility across the region.
Focal CEO Tanya shared the organisation’s journey, which began in 1974 when volunteers sought to improve care for individuals transitioning out of institutional living. “The impact of the NDIS over the years has been transformative, and Focal has been proud to champion inclusion, build community partnerships, and deliver meaningful support,” Tanya said.
Focal’s long-standing hub in Booval has been central to its activities, offering opportunities for social connections, in-home support, and skill-building. Tanya also praised Ipswich’s supportive community and acknowledged the dedication of Focal’s founding members, whose efforts laid the groundwork for five decades of progress.
Looking to the future, Focal aims to continue addressing unmet needs. “Our focus will remain on responsiveness to the community, creating opportunities for independence and purpose,” Tanya said.
During Disability Action Week, Focal is highlighting the importance of inclusive communication—a theme that aligns with its partnership with West Bremer Radio, which has provided a platform for individuals with disabilities to share their stories.
The week culminates in Focal’s annual Christmas celebration, coinciding with International Day of People with Disabilities on December 3. The event, held at the Beacon Community Centre, will feature festivities and performances, including a special appearance by Tom, a Focal client, who shared his excitement for the holidays and his plans for the future on the All Ability Hour.
