Senior drivers across Ipswich are being encouraged to attend a free road safety workshop next month as alarming national road toll figures continue to climb.
Speaking on West Bremer Radio, Sergeant Nadine Webster from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit said the Seniors Road Trip to Road Safety Workshop will provide practical advice to help older motorists stay safe and confident on Queensland roads.
The workshop is being delivered by the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit in partnership with the Ipswich District Road Safety Committee, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, STAR Community Services and the Ipswich District Neighbourhood Watch Committee as part of Queensland Road Safety Week.
“We’re proud to present this year’s Seniors Road Trip to Road Safety Workshop,” Sgt Webster said.
“It’s all about preventing road trauma and helping our senior drivers stay safe on our roads.”
The event comes as the Australian Road Safety Foundation reports that 573 people had lost their lives on Australian roads by May 2026—a 15.5 per cent increase compared with the five-year average for the same period.
“That’s more than three lives lost every single day,” Sgt Webster said.
She said research from the Queensland Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety (CARRS-Q) shows that older drivers are involved in crashes for different reasons than younger motorists.
“Older drivers are considered at fault in around 80 per cent of the crashes they’re involved in, and that’s usually due to misjudging complex intersections or failing to detect hazards rather than deliberate risk-taking,” she said.
The free workshop will feature presentations from the Department of Transport and Main Roads, STAR Community Services, the Ipswich PCYC Breaking the Cycle Program, Ipswich Highway Patrol and the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit.
Participants will receive practical information on current road rules, driving safely as they age, available support services and strategies to reduce the risk of crashes.
The Seniors Road Trip to Road Safety Workshop will be held at the Ipswich Sports Club, Limestone Park, on Tuesday, 18 August, from 10am to 2pm.
The event is free to attend, however registrations are essential and close on 13 August.
