If you’ve been feeling less motivated since winter arrived, you’re not alone—and according to wellness coach Loz Antonenko, it’s not because you’re lazy.

Speaking on West Bremer Radio’s Living Life with Loz, she said the colder months naturally affect both physical and mental wellbeing, making it important to adjust expectations rather than fight against the season.

“Your body is responding to the season, not failing you,” Loz said.

“When the days get shorter and the temperature drops, your body shifts. Serotonin drops, melatonin rises, and your energy, motivation and mood can all take a hit. That’s biology—not laziness.”

Rather than trying to maintain the same pace as the warmer months, Loz encourages people to recalibrate their routines.

“Winter calls for a recalibration, not a complete shutdown,” she said.

“Adjust the routine, not the standard. Your mojo didn’t leave—it just put a jumper on and went a little bit quiet.”

Loz believes one of the biggest mistakes people make is relying on motivation alone.

“When motivation disappears—and it will in winter—your habits become your heater,” she said.

She recommends creating a handful of simple, non-negotiable daily habits that continue regardless of the weather, such as drinking water first thing in the morning, eating a protein-rich breakfast, taking a short walk or sticking to a regular bedtime.

“You don’t need to feel like doing it. Those small habits keep your momentum going even when motivation isn’t there.”

Another common trap during winter is withdrawing from friends, family and the wider community.

Loz said while rest is important, prolonged isolation can significantly impact mood and wellbeing.

“Connection isn’t a luxury—it’s fuel,” she said.

“Whether it’s a walk with a friend, a phone call with someone who makes you laugh, or showing up in a community that gets you, staying connected through winter is one of the most underrated things you can do for your mojo.”

“You can’t hibernate your way to feeling better. Connection is the comeback.”

For those who still feel like they’re struggling despite making changes, Loz has developed a free online Fix Your Mojo Quiz, designed to identify what’s having the biggest impact on energy and motivation.

The quiz explores areas such as sleep, stress, nutrition, hydration, movement and daily routines to help participants understand where improvements can be made.

The free quiz is available through Loz Life and Loz’s social media channels.
