Limelight Cinemas is reporting strong demand for horror films, with online buzz helping drive audiences back into cinemas for the latest round of big-screen scares.
Cinema spokesperson Lex said the recent release of Obsession had taken off quickly after gaining major traction on social media, particularly TikTok. The film was added to Limelight’s schedule at short notice after strong demand from moviegoers searching for local screenings.
The move paid off, with sessions filling quickly once the film was confirmed. Lex said horror films are increasingly being powered by online audience reaction, with viewers sharing their cinema experiences and helping build momentum around new releases.
That trend is expected to continue this week with the release of Backrooms, another horror title already generating significant interest online. The film has seen strong pre-sales and is expected to attract fans of unsettling, internet-driven horror stories.
Lex said horror may not be for everyone, but there is no denying the genre is having a major moment with cinema audiences.
For those looking for something lighter, Power Ballad is also arriving at Limelight Cinemas. The comedy stars Paul Rudd as a washed-up wedding singer and Nick Jonas as a boy band frontman who finds success after reworking one of the singer’s old songs.
The film has been described as a feel-good comedy, with early audience reactions overseas pointing to strong appeal for viewers after laughs rather than scares.
Families will also have a new option this weekend, with The Buffalo Kids screening for a limited time. The family-friendly release has been added as a weekend option ahead of the next major run of children’s films.
Meanwhile, The Mandalorian and Grogu continues to bring Star Wars fans through the doors, with themed merchandise selling quickly following the film’s release. Collectable cups and tins remain available in limited numbers, while other items sold out rapidly.
Lex said the strong response from Star Wars fans showed how much audiences still value event-style cinema releases, especially when paired with limited merchandise and big-screen experiences.
Session times and tickets are available through Limelight Cinemas.
