On this week’s All Ability Hour on West Bremer Radio, Patty and returning guest Loren shared a heartfelt and insightful conversation about navigating autism diagnosis and parenting.

Loren, who is both a support worker and a parent, opened up about her journey with her two-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum. She recounted the challenges of identifying developmental delays, starting with speech issues initially attributed to mild hearing loss from viral meningitis.

“Once the hearing corrected itself, we realized the delays were deeper than we first thought,” Lauren said, explaining that the process involved navigating speech therapy, occupational therapy, and assessments.

Her son, currently identified between Level 2 and Level 3 on the autism spectrum, has made significant strides, thanks to early intervention and tailored therapies. Lauren emphasized the importance of listening to parental instincts:
“If something feels off, don’t hesitate to seek help.”

Patty also shared her experience with her daughter’s ADHD diagnosis, highlighting how the journey transformed her family dynamics:
“Diagnosis helped us understand her better. Now, my husband and daughter share a stronger bond because he knows how to speak her language.”

The conversation delved into the societal perceptions of neurodivergent children. Loren criticised comments like, “Your child doesn’t look autistic,” and stressed that autism doesn’t have a “look.”
“Each child’s needs and traits are unique, and it’s vital for society to embrace that diversity,” she said.

Both mothers encouraged parents to embrace assessments as tools for growth, not labels, emphasizing that the right diagnosis empowers children and their families.

The All Ability Hour continues next Saturday at noon with more stories of inclusivity and community support. Tune in via the West Bremer Radio app or online.
